MADE IN SAMOA SPOTLIGHT – THE SAMOAN SANDPIPER MOTIF from http://
One of the most prevalent motifs and symbols in the South Pacific. It’s origin is widely held to be representative of a flower. However its original and true meaning is of the footprint left by the sand piper on the sandy shores. Footprints which dot the sandy shores as flocks of sandpipers comb the coast for food. And when the tides arise again they erase all traces of the footprints.
Like many Pacific Motifs it symbolizes the passage of time and the eternal cycle of becoming and unbecoming – of the now and impermanence.
